Who We Are

“My CVI Kids” is a parent-led national initiative dedicated to raising awareness, education, and structured support for children with CVI in Malaysia.

We exist to bridge the gap between families, healthcare professionals, and educators by promoting informed recognition, early identification, and collaborative intervention strategies.

Why We Started: Hamza’s Story

In early 2025, on 2 January 2025, to be exact, our family began hearing terms we had never encountered before. During medical discussions, we were told that Hamza likely had occipital blindness or cortical blindness. It was a term that immediately brought uncertainty, and we never imagined how our world would turn upside down when we heard it.

We were told that his eyes were structurally healthy, yet something about how he responded to the visual world after his discharge from the ICU in November 2024, following 16 days of admission, felt different.

As we continued seeking clarity, further understanding and professional input helped refine the picture. We learned that the broader diagnosis was Cerebral Visual Impairment, or CVI.

CVI is a neurological condition. It affects how the brain processes visual information. A child with CVI may have healthy eyes, but the brain interprets visual signals differently due to disruption in the visual processing pathways.

What began as confusion slowly became understanding. We realised that the terminology had evolved. What was once widely referred to as Cortical Blindness is now more accurately described as Cerebral Visual Impairment, reflecting the understanding that visual processing involves wider areas of the brain beyond just the cortex.

For us, this was not simply a diagnosis. It was the beginning of a learning journey.

From Private Journey to Public Advocacy

For more than a year, we kept Hamza’s journey private. Not out of fear or hesitation, but because we needed time to understand it ourselves.
We read. We researched. We sought professional guidance. We connected with experts. We began to see the broader gap in awareness and structured support within Malaysia.

What started as a personal search for answers became something larger. My CVI Kids was born from lived experience. We created this initiative to bridge knowledge gaps, support early recognition, and provide families with clear, practical information grounded in evidence and compassion.

Hamza’s story is still unfolding. CVI requires ongoing understanding, structured intervention strategies, and collaboration across healthcare, education, and home environments. There is no single pathway, and each child’s visual profile is unique.

We share our journey for awareness as we believe that when families are informed, supported, and connected, outcomes improve.
Definitely, when awareness grows, systems evolve.

Through My CVI Kids, we hope to contribute to a future where no child with CVI in Malaysia is misunderstood, overlooked, or left without support.

“No parent should feel alone navigating CVI. This community exists because shared knowledge and support can change a child’s future.”

Co-Founder, My CVI Kids

“When I realised how little awareness there was about CVI, I knew we had to build a space
where parents could feel informed, supported, and understood.”
